Discovery Hub is the department for young people with Speech, Language and Communication needs (SLCN) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Discovery Hub caters for young people across Key Stages 2, 3, and 4. Each tutor group has its own learning base which is specifically designed to support SLCN/ASD pupils, with work stations for each learner, as well as visual supports where appropriate. Pupils are taught in groups of a maximum of eight, supported by a teacher and a Learning Facilitator. KS2 and KS3 classes spend the majority of their lessons in their learning bases with their tutor and LF. KS4 classes are taught by a range of specialist staff, but are supported by their LF for most lessons. Staff in Discovery receive ongoing training in the areas of SLCN/ASD.
There is a high emphasis on developing speech, language and communication skills, as well as social development. Based on assessment of need, students receive 1:1 tuition in Maths and English, 1:1 speech and language sessions, 1:1 and small group mentoring sessions, and access Nurture sessions to work on specific social skills. Students have their own play area separate from the rest of the Learning Centre, and have access to a sensory room and soft room.
